Return to Kuujjuaq, Nunavik 2022

The Canadian Animal Assistance Team (CAAT) were happy to be invited back to Kuujjuaq to provide veterinary services again. The pandemic delayed our return and we were happy to learn that the community had a local veterinarian during that time, which is a very unusual thing in a far Northern Inuit community. Kuujjuaq is the largest community in the Nunavik region (Northern Quebec) and there were many people wanting to have veterinary care for their pets. The dogs in Kuujjuaq are mostly pets, although there are some sled dog teams still in the area. There are very few cats but we did see some. Mr. Martin was a rather large orange tabby cat that was incredibly relaxed in the atmosphere of dogs in the gymnasium we worked in. He was given his vaccination boosters and a thorough check over and was completely chill the whole time. We also had a very playful, sweet Husky puppy (Aku) come in with his mother (Huskee) and they were neutered and spayed at the same time and snuggled together in recovery. We saw a total of 74 animals during our clinic, mostly for spay/neuter and vaccinations, but we also a few familiar faces of pet owners who returned to have their pets vaccination boosters (they were already spayed/neutered during our last visit in 2019). All in all a very successful clinic in the far North!
